FIELD NOTES

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND FIELD NOTES

When we released our 14th seasonal limited edition, we decided it was about time to get back to our roots. Field Notes in general, and the National Crop Edition specifically, owe their existence to a tradition of promotional memo books distributed to American farmers over the last hundred years by seed, tractor, and other agricultural companies.

Field Notes co-founder Aaron Draplin has been collecting these for years, “rescuing them” from obscurity. He talks about Field Notes’ ancestry in this film, From Seed, and we’re happy to present an ever-growing collection of our “family tree” for your perusal.

ORIGINAL KRAFT

These started it all.
Field Notes' Original 48-page Kraft notebook measures 3-1/2" wide by 5-1/2" tall and is bound by a rugged three-staple saddle-stitch process.

NATIONAL PARKS

Gorgeous illustrations of iconic National Parks are featured on the covers of these Memo Books, which are grouped into 3-Packs that make up the “National Parks” Series.

EXPEDITION

A virtually indestructible notebook printed on Yupo Synthetic paper an amazing tearproof and waterproof paper extruded from polypropylene pellets in Chesapeake, Virginia. Tough and ready for action!

HATCH

A collaboration between Field Notes and Hatch, Nashville’s legendary letterpress print shop that was founded in 1879 and remains the living heartbeat of classic American poster design.
Based on a three-poster public service campaign about effective poster design,  named Pressing Issues: A Series on Ink, Paper, and Muscle, that, after finished, were cut up into covers for Memo Books.
